Thirteen punches right out of the box and your show based on “Superstitions” is off to a flying start. Lots of sinister music and some great woodwind moments follow. A trumpet trio could introduce black cats or any other bad luck omen before the final accelerando and return to the thirteen punches to provide a bookend type effect for this opening production.
Part Two is jazzy and light, and is intended to introduce good luck omens including four leaf clovers and horseshoes. It builds to a big and brassy shout chorus before yielding to a slower Mellophone solo, section features, and a full ensemble passage that evokes images of mirrors, pieces of a broken mirror, and shattered glass.
The finale could be all about ladders, which would make a great visual addition to the field. Lots of percussion and section features suggest many staging and ladder placement possibilities, and the chance to explore climbing, spinning or playing on them, and maybe even running under some tall ones as the music builds to a climax. At the end, thirteen punches recapitulate the original motive of the show.
As with any Center X Productions show, visual concepts can be changed to fit the needs of your group. This show offers many unique musical moments and ideas that would work well with many themes or guard ideas.
