New Orleans Sketches

Beautifully interwoven with the music, this storyline is all about New Orleans. There will be no mistake; the iconic music that is universally loved and representative of the city of New Orleans, begins this show.

The opening is thoughtful and includes a flute soloist accompanied by the front ensemble playing the Faure “Pavane.” Visuals should represent strolling through the streets of New Orleans, possibly in the morning, and then encountering street musicians. One by one a trumpet, tuba, and snare drum enter playing a typical Dixieland-type tune. This builds until the entire ensemble has joined in for a rousing, fun, and upbeat opening production that sets the stage for the energy and jazzy vibe of the French Quarter.

Part Two begins with a jazzy motif in the saxophone section which is repeated to build tension. This tension could be depicted with an encounter with a “card shark” or “shadowy” type of character who tries to con your performers or lead them intro trouble. This journey toward the “dark side” of New Orleans builds through jazz improvisation and drum moments toward a dark crisis.

At the beginning of Part Three (the ballad) you have ‘hit bottom’ on your journey to the darker, seedy side of life, as a soloist plays “Amazing Grace” superimposed with the Faure “Pavane.” This moment of redemption grows to its climax with full band involvement.

For the conclusion, a small combo strikes up a Dixieland version of “Amazing Grace” while the band celebrates their return to grace and to the lighter, more fun side of New Orleans. The show ends with this celebration and builds to an up-tempo energetic conclusion.

You don’t have to go far for the perfect inspiration for backdrops, props and scenery for your show – the city of New Orleans itself! From the iconic lampposts, to Mardi Gras colors, to famous streets, buildings, and statues, the possibilities are endless. Note: Outdoor props should be at least ten feet high and five feet wide for visual appeal. Your props need to translate to the top of the press box. Keep in mind the number of props that would create a balanced look on the field. One small painting on the back hash of the 50 yard will not create much impact. Designers create intrigue by using items in odd numbers (3, 5, 7 and so on). You should consider the same principle with your props.

You also have a wide range of costuming options – perhaps adding a bright colored plume, a sash or even Mardi Gras beads to your band uniforms. The auxiliary costumes and flags should be bright and playful.
