Balance

The thought of balance is a very appealing one, especially in regard to a balanced life. Juggling all areas of life and getting things just right in order to feel great is a constant challenge for modern man. Still, in the end, we find that the perfectly balanced life is unattainable. Instead, we need to know and accept who we are and the way things are in order to set our goals and priorities accordingly. This confidence becomes the foundation for inner peace and the basis of our story. Edit these ideas, use them as voice-overs throughout your production, or incorporate them as inspirational backdrops.
Prelude/Chaos:
Find Life - Once we stop fretting over making everyone happy, eating a specific diet and/or maintaining a rigorous exercise routine, fulfillment comes. Work becomes inspired. Stress is marginalized and a freshness ensues which allows us to think better and perform with greater effectiveness.
Acceptance paves the way for peace. Medical science has proven that no individual can achieve a perfect balance and live on this tightrope for a sustained length of time. Begin your story with the resolution to stand on the solid ground of reality versus the “perfect balance” of perfection.
Balance:
Live in The Real World – This is where the conflict ensues and the challenge is waged. Do we continue to pursue the “balanced life” in spite of all odds? Can we settle into ‘making a living’ and still attain a healthy sense of purpose and fulfillment? Ultimately anything that makes it harder to live in reality should be given a second thought. It doesn’t matter which aspect of life is holding us back. The interesting thing is that most of the habits and lifestyles we have imposed upon ourselves are the same ones we adopted in order to improve and simplify our lives. Too often, they have the opposite effect in the end.
Quest:
The measure of true success is a peace that perfect “balance” only promises to attain. In actually, that peace only comes when limitations are accepted and honored for how they define and characterize our uniqueness. This brings stability to a life well lived. A focus on quality relationships with friends and family, having a purpose or profession you love, eating well and exercising regularly, maintaining relaxation time and knowing how to unwind bring joy rather than stress when viewed in a proper perspective. Walking the tight rope and finding balance means perfecting all of these areas nearly 100% of the time, which is exhausting and unattainable. Stability, on the other hand, is true balance and comes from doing things well 80% of the time and leaving yourself (and your mind) that 20% leeway to breathe!
Editor’s note: I especially love the final few sentences about walking the tightrope! Whether you use voice-overs or not throughout your presentation, be sure to incorporate visuals that demonstrate the difficulty of maintaining balance, such as walking a tightrope or thin line, losing your balance and so on.
Guard costumes should be modern and fresh and your flag designs with elements of jagged and diagonal lines for the opener (Chaos), curved forms for Balance, and a mountain-like landscape for Quest.
Other options for “Balance”
1) Keeping the theme of balance, if your auxiliary is up to the challenge, you could present a show that incorporates gymnastics. Including, but not limited to balance beams, rhythmic streamers, exercise balls, floor exercise and tumbling.
2) How about this quote for a different type of inspirational show? “I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” - Jimmy Dean
