Drew Shanefield has created a captivating composition with “Voices of the People.”  His intent was to capture an ‘old country meets the modern world feel.’  Many of the melodies and harmonic language is distinctly Eastern European.  Bulgarian folk melodies and 18th/19th century Hebraic folk songs provided much of Drew’s inspiration.  “Harvest Festival” uses clashing dissonances and sweet consonances to give the piece dynamic inherent tension and release.  The modern and driving 7/4 groove in the percussion is really hip and a great juxtaposition against the old world melody.  “Wedding Scene” has a bottle dance feel to it with the use of tambourine, hand claps and an energetic melody/counter melody.  This makes a fun production number.  “Song of Love” is comprised of a hypnotic rhythmic loop, always growing in intensity, pitted against a lovely love song, trance-like in effect, yet sublime and expressive.   Energy, drive and passion makes “Celebration” a wonderful culmination to “Voices of the People”.  This dynamic closer is marked by quick tempi, compound meter and a joyous melody.
