Originally commissioned for Quakertown Community Senior High School, Quakertown, PA, Adam Gumble and Frank Parker Directors; “Hydrodynamics” is another masterpiece by Andrew Yozviak. Andrew’s inspiration was the sea. The ascending and descending scale structures throughout the composition are musical representations of molecules heating up and cooling down.
“’Hydrodynamics’ is the show that refreshes!”
Water
Starting with an introduction of undulating and arrhythmic waves, the opener builds throughout until everything boils over and there is a final release of steam.
Steam
Andrew cleverly used rhythmic vocals rather than percussion for a unique sound. There are steam sound effects and a chorale which has an ethereal quality. The ascending motive is used in ballad to represent water turning to steam.
Ice
The closer is rhythmic, angular, intense and filled with sharp dissonant chords that represent the freeze motif. “Ice” stops and starts just as pieces of ice would break off from an ice flow. The water idea is revisited at the end as the ice melts back into water. The triumphant sea returns to end the show.
