The musical genesis of “Frank Lloyd Wright” is Wright’s famous architecture. Tim Hinton chose three of Frank’s most famous buildings to portray musically. In authentic Frank Lloyd Wright fashion, Hinton sought to depict not only the structure of the buildings but the settings as well. “Taliesin West”, located in the desert near Scottsdale, Arizona is a long, angular building that seems to have grown out of the red hills of the stark location. The music depicts the wide open spaces as well as a soundscape that, like the desert, is exotic and stark.
“Fallingwater” is a dramatic home built over a 30 foot waterfall nestled in the woods of Western Pennsylvania. Tim used repeated falling figures in the mallets and woodwinds to bring to mind the constant flow of water. This is accompanied by a hymn-like theme that is in keeping with the serenity and dignity of this special place. One of the world’s most well known museum structures was the inspiration for “Guggenheim Museum, NYC.” The energy and non-stop excitement of the city is musically depicted as well as using falling chromatics to bring to mind the downward spiral of the museum itself. A drum feature builds on these musical ideas until a recap of all the themes ends the show in a grand fashion.
