J.R. Trimpe drew upon the classic George Orwell novel 1984 as an inspiration for this rousing, thought provoking, and creatively explosive composition. The opening strains set the tone for a spellbinding thrill ride of explosive chords and well crafted melodies that will hook your audience from beginning to end. They may even be inspired to read the book themselves (or at least the Cliffs Notes!). 

“The Negative Utopia” was inspired by one of the first scenes of the book. The main character Winston Smith is doing something that he shouldn’t be doing. He tries to start a diary. J.R. musically captures the awkward attempt at free expression and the ultimate suppression in the opener which is heavy, rigid, extremely percussive, and foreboding. The ballad of “Winston’s Secret” starts with a small quartet or quintet bringing back the creative theme in a dark and ominous structure. You hear small moments from the opener pop up almost like you are looking over your shoulder to make sure no one is following you. The closer of “Big Brother is Watching You” masterfully maintains the militaristic and dark vibe of the show. It cleverly highlights a world where you do NOT step out of line.
